General Description and Classification Standards
Directs and coordinates the preparation of a sustainability development plan for the City of Atlanta. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to coordinating with other city departments, agencies and other public and private agencies to implement, execute and maintain the sustainability development plan and participate in public/private partnerships aimed at creating and sustaining development through partnerships, collaboration, and outreach. Provide vision and leadership to enhance integration and coordination during complex and high profile projects as well as ongoing processes involving other city departments, agencies and other external partners.
This is a high level of strategic and operations management reporting to a top department executive or a department deputy. Position manages a primary function of the department and recommends operating policy and procedure subject to department executive approval. This level would be expected to manage either a varied array of professionals and manager. This is NOT a routine promotional level and the specific justification for classification at this level must be documented.
Direction received is very general and focuses on strategic objectives and is typically collaborative in nature. This is a policy-making level of management and would be considered "upper middle" management.Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provides management and supervision of the Sustainability Division and coordinates with other city departments to meet their sustainability goals as set forth by the Mayor’s Office.
Manages the success of sustainability goals emphasizing effective communication, problem-solving, continuous improvement, and effective, efficient and accountable service to external and internal customers.
Nurtures strong, constructive relationships that exist with colleges, universities, county governments, community nonprofits, and local business community as well as other municipal jurisdictions in the county and in the City of Atlanta metro region.
Works regularly with neighborhood organizations and other interested groups to support and facilitate democratic process of government providing resolution of competing interests.
As part of a management team, provides leadership and contributes to the development and implementation of the strategic sustainability plan while providing comprehensive customer service.
Facilitates processes to define the vision, goals and strategies to achieve those goals and to advance the city's social, economic and environmental priorities.
Coordinates programs and projects within the division and among other departments, work groups and government agencies to ensure work is completed cooperatively and efficiently, and ensures resources and assistance are provided as appropriate.
Provides technical guidance and serves as a policy advisor to the Mayor’s Office, Department of Executive Offices, Chief Operating Officer and other boards and commissions, and various public groups.
Coordinates and manages complex and high profile projects involving competing interests and multiple objectives.
Takes a strategic, creative, and innovative approach to issues and problems leveraging success through strategic analysis and calculated risks.
Provides excellent customer service to support and reinforce open-minded and solution-oriented staff responses to customer needs. Uses the customer's perspective to find ways to address issues and concerns while balancing the needs of the city and ensuring consistency with adopted policies.

Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and operations of the City of Atlanta. Extensive knowledge of urban planning, community development, management, human resource, and financial or another area relating to the practices, policies and procedures as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Extensive knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to specific duties and responsibilities. Informed of any changes in policy, methods, operations, budgetary and equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental operations and activities. Knowledgeable and proficient with computers. Proven skills as a pragmatist who completes goals in an efficient and effective manner with a track record of solving problems and resolving issues in difficult, complex and/or contentious situations. Ability to foster interpersonal and intergovernmental relationships.Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, environmental management, environmental science, environmental engineering, architecture, public administration, business administration or related field (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an 8 years' of progressively responsible administrative and managerial experience in providing direction and supervision of relevant programs and operations. Previous land use and planning experience to include long-range planning, ecological planning, urban design and historic preservation, zoning administration, development review, and zoning enforcement and/or significant experience with community sustainability efforts involving economic, social, and environmental sustainability policy development and implementation. Supervisory experience and project management experience also required.Preferred Education & Experience
Master’s degree preferred in urban planning, public administration, business administration or related field; 9-10 years' experience of closely related, progressively responsible administrative or managerialLicensures and Certifications
