Job Description

Zekelman Industries is seeking an Environmental Manager, based out of our Western Tube facility in Long Beach, California.

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Affairs, this person is responsible for the environmental reporting and compliance for the company's manufacturing facility located in California, United States. Other responsibilities include the preparation of calculations, cost estimates, environmental impact data and related documentation and presentations. Assignments require occasional independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification to standard environmental techniques, procedures, and criteria.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Provides support and on-going management of various environmental projects including storm water, waste/process water, hazardous and California-hazardous waste streams, environmental compliance, environmental clean-up, construction, and facility improvement projects.
  • Performs project fieldwork, conducts minor survey tasks, collect and prepare samples for environmental sampling. Order tests and inspections to compare to current standards. Prepares technical reports for review agencies of various levels.
  • Assists with the procurement and administration of consultant and contractor services. Monitors construction and vendor activities to assure contractual compliance for specific environmental service projects.
  • Participates in project technical meetings and prepare written minutes and reports as required. Prepare presentations for diverse audiences. Provides technical support at agency meetings.
  • Maintains and updates environmental documents, tank monitoring records, and project technical files by recording, tracking, and reporting project and/or operating data.
  • Provides guidance and training regarding environmental management, pollution prevention, and compliance issues specific to California regulations. Participates in environmental site inspections and audits. Provides technical assistance during spills and other environmental emergencies including potential environmental liabilities.
  • Provides persons responsible for preparing regulated wastes for shipment the proper training to complete documentation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental legislation (Federal and California specifc), resource conservation, pollution prevention practices and engineering principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental monitoring, mitigation principles and compliance with environmental guidelines.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, meet deadlines while completing and coordinating concurrent inter-jurisdictional projects.
  • Ability to interpret, prepare and present information from engineering plans, specifications, drawings and current government legislation.
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork and prepare drawings/documentation.
  • Ability to perform environmental calculations, analyze and present data, document and present conclusions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, supervisors, consultants, the public and third party advocacy groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reporting requirements including the annual air permit reporting, waste class registration, and water discharge reporting.
  • Ability to travel to various Zekelman Industries locations throughout the US

Education & Experience:

  • 5-7 years' experience in managing environmental and regulatory compliance in a manufacturing facility in the State of California.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field (chemistry, engineering, etc.)
